ZZ plant is a beautiful houseplant, growing from a rhizome or underground stem. It needs to be consistently watered, but over-watering will cause root rot, a problem that cannot be easily solved. The first sign of root rot is yellowing on the newer leaves and eventually browning on older leaves as the plant dies off. ZZ Plants are also known as Zamioculcas zamiifolia. Plants of this species are native to tropical region of Africa. After they come from the humid region, it is necessary for them to be watered properly. Learning how often to water a ZZ plant is essential to keeping it going strong.
If you have this plant, here are some tips for proper ZZ plant care.
- The ZZ plant is low-maintenance and needs very little water.
- ZZ plants only require watering when the soil is completely dry.
- ZZ plants respond very well to misting.
- ZZ plants can grow in dry soil.
During Summer Season:
In the summertime, watering your ZZ plant once a week, in the wintertime, watering should be every other week. The plant grows best when the soil is kept evenly moist but not wet. If your ZZ plant is receiving plenty of light, you should not need to water it very often.
However, if the plant is receiving too much light, then the soil may dry out too quickly. When this happens, add 1/2 teaspoon (1.5 mL) of lukewarm water every week.
Also, if the plant is receiving too much light, you may notice the ZZ plant flowers developing 5-7 weeks earlier than expected.
During Winters:
The ZZ plant dislikes cold temperatures, and wither in temperatures below 50 degrees F (10 degrees C). Fertilize the ZZ plant in the spring. The plant likes well-draining soil. If you have poor drainage, use a potting mix that has sufficient drainage features.
If you want to propagate your ZZ plant, use a sharp pair of scissors to cut 3 to 4 inch
What is the maximum temperature that the ZZ plant can tolerate?
The plant will tolerate temperatures ranging from 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) to 80 degrees F (27 degrees C), and it needs very little water.
Place the plant in a location that receives fresh sunlight, but doesn’t place it in an area wherever it will be exposed to frost.
What is the best way to care for a ZZ plant indoors?
The ZZ plant does well indoors and outside. It can grow in full or partial sunlight but will also grow well indoors.
ZZ plants can be grown indoors in pots or hanging baskets. They prefer moist soil, but they can tolerate drier conditions.
The leaves of the ZZ plant are poisonous to cats and dogs, so leaving them on the floor or table isn’t a good idea.

But what do you do if you accidentally overwater a plant? Or if you have an infected plant that is producing fruit?
Try to dig up the soil around the plant, and bring the infected soil into a pot. Then put it in another area of the garden.
